Annual Report 2009

GREEN AID
Registered Charity Number: 1102151

Report of the Trustees for the year 2009

This report on the activities of Green Aid is for the year from 1 September 2008 to 31 August 2009.

This year the charity was able to distribute all of the funds received during the year. It also utilised a small proportion of the Reserves built up in the previous two years. The Trustees believe there should still be sufficient reserve to enable the Charity to fulfil its objectives in the coming years.

The income of the charity was lower than previous years because of reduced fund raising activities. The Trustees were comfortable with dipping into reserves to maintain a higher level of donations than the year’s income would have funded

The principle fund raising activity is through the activities of our Chairman, Colin Green and other members and friends of the Green Family. Corporate donations come from companies in Israel and it is the charity’s policy that funds donated by Israeli companies are used to support charitable causes in Israel.

During the year we have focused mainly on educational, medical and humanitarian causes. The motor bike ambulance for Magen David Adom which was funded in the previous year was delivered during this financial year and is deployed in Jerusalem – please see the information below about the deployment received from MDA.

During the year we made significant donations to the following charitable institutions:

  • United Jewish Israel Appeal
  • The Shalom Foundation
  • Magen David Adom
  • The Yad Eliezer Trust
  • Young Israel of North Netanya
  • Shalom Nursery
  • Anglo-Israel Association
  • British Youth Opera

We have also supported among other charitable causes:

  • Hazon Yeshaya
  • The Laniado Hosptital
  • ABESU
  • Kingston Surbiton and District Synagogue
  • Nightingale House
  • Research into leukaemia, cancer and osteoporosis

We have also made a large number of smaller donations to a wide range of charities, particularly supporting causes in Israel whose work is in fields relevant to our Objects.

Green Aid also administers the Antithesis Charitable Trust. This fund distributed CDs recorded specially for it by the artiste “Antithesis” with all the net sale proceeds being devoted to the objects of the Charity. To date, from the proceeds, donations of £2000 have been made to the United Jewish Israel Appeal and £1000 to the International Coalition for Missing Israeli Soldiers. No new CD was issued this year so the Trusts income for year of £223 was considerably down on previous years. A new release is planned for 2010 which should see increased income next year.

We would also like to acknowledge with thanks the help and support from Philip Weinberg of Marks Bloom of Kingston Upon Thames

The following information was received from Yiftach Levi, the director of the National First Responders unit.

Motorbike – Operational number 1057 Stationed in Jerusalem
One of the first responders assigned for this motorbike is Beni Livkend – a Jerusalem resident Mr. Livkend is 29 years old, married +2. He has been volunteering in MDA since the age of 15 and married his childhood sweetheart whom he met in MDA.His wife’s parents were murdered a month after his first child was born – shooting in Gush Katif. He and his wife decided to take over the role of looking after the siblings. Beni is working in a legal consulting company and studying law at night yet he still finds the time to volunteer in MDA. Ever since Beni received the motorbike, about a year ago, he has responded to over 180 calls – an average of 15 per year.

A few days ago, after coming home from work at midnight, he responded to a call from the dispatch center regarding an unconscious adult living just a few blocks away. Despite the lack of sleep, Beni responded immediately and arrived to the scene and started treating the patient. The MICU team which arrived a few minutes later continued treating the patient and as a result of the immediate care the patient recovered.

The patient’s son, a high valued heart surgeon from Hadassah hospital was grateful for the immediate treatment and care his father received.

Beni says that the genuine appreciation is the one of his family who stand by him and especially his wife.
